The short answer
A light jet from Teterboro to Washington takes about 50 minutes, and a one-way charter usually costs between about $8,000 and $14,500. Most trips use Dulles (IAD), which has 11,500-foot runways, two FBOs and no special security program, but it is about 53 minutes by road from central Washington without traffic. What most people don't know: Reagan National is only about 11 minutes from downtown, but any private flight into it needs an armed security officer aboard, screening at a TSA-approved gateway airport before departure, passenger and crew details sent to TSA at least 24 hours ahead, and an FAA slot reservation.

What goes into the price
On a 50-minute trip the flight is a small part of the bill. A same-day trip is priced as an aircraft that flies down, waits and flies back, so the cost depends on how long the crew waits and whether the aircraft stays overnight.
The rest is the usual:
- the 7.5% federal excise tax and a $5.30 per-passenger segment fee in 2026
- handling at Teterboro and at the Washington FBO
- catering
- landing fees, which apply at Dulles and Reagan National
A flight into Reagan National carries extra requirements, which the operator prices into the quote: an armed security officer aboard, and a $15 TSA threat assessment fee for each passenger and crewmember submitted.
What makes this route cheaper or more expensive
Which airport. Dulles and Leesburg are ordinary charter destinations. Reagan National adds the security program, the slot and the officer.
Waiting versus returning empty. A day trip with the aircraft waiting costs less than two separate one-way flights. The low end of the round-trip range assumes a same-day return. An overnight stay adds parking, and Reagan National’s FBO has none.
Date. The cherry blossom weeks and other busy Washington weekends are the hardest to book.
Empty legs on this route
Aircraft move between the New York area and Washington in both directions, so empty legs are possible. That is broker experience and not a published statistic. Charter Jet One’s own figure for the saving is up to 75%.
Two illustrative examples:
- Southbound. A midsize jet is heading empty to Dulles to collect passengers on Thursday. You could fly down with it.
- Northbound. A light jet has dropped a group in Washington and is returning to Teterboro empty. You could fly up with it.
These show how empty legs arise. They aren’t flights for sale. They follow the operator’s timing and can change at short notice.
Departing from Teterboro
Teterboro is about 12 miles from Midtown, roughly 22 minutes in free-flow traffic. It has runways of 6,997 and 6,014 feet, and FBOs from Jet Aviation, Atlantic and Signature. The airport asks for voluntary restraint between 11 pm and 6 am. For a flight to Reagan National, the departure airport matters in a second way, because it has to be an approved gateway (see below).
Which Washington airport
| Dulles (IAD) | Reagan National (DCA) | Leesburg (JYO) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Road distance to central Washington | about 29.5 miles, 53 minutes | about 4.5 miles, 11 minutes | about 37 miles, 54 minutes |
| Longest runway | 11,500 feet | 7,169 feet | 5,500 feet |
| FBOs | Signature, Atlantic | Signature | Kuhn Jet Center |
| Special security rules | None | DASSP, slot | None |
| Customs | Yes, Signature on site | Not listed | Yes, 24 hours’ notice |
Drive times are free-flow estimates without traffic, measured to a point near the White House.
Our pick: Dulles. It is the one that works for nearly every aircraft and every passenger list without extra approvals. Signature is open around the clock, customs is on site if you are continuing abroad, and the runways suit any aircraft that fits at Teterboro. The cost is the drive, which is long without traffic and longer in rush hour.
Reagan National when the clock matters. It is about 11 minutes from the center of Washington, but it needs the security program (below). It is also a small airfield: three runways, the longest 7,169 feet, and one FBO, Signature, which is open 6 am to 10 pm with no overnight parking.
Leesburg when Dulles is crowded. Leesburg Executive is 9 to 10 nautical miles from Dulles. It has one 5,500-foot runway, Kuhn Jet Center as the FBO and U.S. Customs from 6 am to 9 pm, seven days, with 24 hours’ notice. It is about as far from central Washington as Dulles.
Reagan National and the DASSP
Reagan National is the only airport in the region with extra security rules for private flights. They come from the TSA’s DCA Access Standard Security Program, known as the DASSP, and from 49 CFR part 1562. The main points:
- Gateway airport. The flight must depart from a gateway airport that the TSA has approved, and make no stops on the way. The TSA’s list of gateways wasn’t on a page we could open, so Jake confirms that your departure FBO at Teterboro is approved before quoting.
- Screening. Each passenger and crewmember must be screened under the program before boarding, and carry government photo ID. The aircraft itself is searched.
- Armed security officer. At least one qualified armed security officer must be aboard, unless a Federal Air Marshal is on the aircraft or the flight carries no passengers, such as a positioning leg.
- Vetting. Flight crew pass a fingerprint-based criminal history check. The operator sends passenger and crew information to the TSA at least 24 hours before departure, and the TSA charges $15 for each person submitted.
- Slot. The FAA requires a slot reservation for every unscheduled arrival and departure, from 6 am to 11:59 pm daily.
- The operator. NBAA’s summary of the program lists the operators that can take part, including charter operators under a Twelve-Five Standard Security Program flying aircraft over 12,500 pounds. The program document itself is restricted security information, so we can’t describe it in detail.
If you want Reagan National, tell Jake early. The operator needs to be approved, an officer arranged and a slot secured. If the plan can’t be done in time, Dulles is the fallback.
Arriving at Dulles
The airport. Washington Dulles International (IAD) is about 20 miles west of Washington. It has four runways, the longest 11,500 feet.
FBOs. Signature, at 23950 Wind Sock Drive, is open 24 hours with customs and immigration on site. It reports no overnight hangar or ramp parking, only day-use hangar space. Atlantic Aviation is the second FBO. Jake asks both about parking for your dates.
Ramp and fees. Landing fees apply. The FAA Chart Supplement warns that when traffic is heavy, long-term parking may be unavailable and only fuel and quick-turn services may be offered.
Ground transport. Jake arranges a car at the FBO. Allow well over the free-flow time in rush hour.
Seasons and events
| Event | Dates |

| National Cherry Blossom Festival | March 20 to April 11, 2027 |
When to book. For the cherry blossom weeks and other peak weekends, ask for a quote as early as you can. For Reagan National, ask earlier still.
Which aircraft fits best
A turboprop such as a Pilatus PC-12 or a light jet such as a Phenom 300E is the natural choice to Dulles or Leesburg. A midsize jet gives more room for seven or eight people. For Reagan National, the operator’s security program decides the aircraft: NBAA lists aircraft over 12,500 pounds for charter operators under a Twelve-Five program, which excludes the smallest jets.
How Jake handles this route
Jake confirms the operator is ARGUS Gold or Platinum rated. For Dulles and Leesburg he checks parking and customs for your dates. For Reagan National he asks the operator for its DASSP approval first, confirms the gateway FBO at Teterboro, confirms the officer and the slot are arranged, and quotes only when they are in hand. He plans a fallback to Dulles in case anything slips. A car meets you at the FBO, and he often meets clients on the ramp at Teterboro.
Questions people ask about Teterboro to Washington, DC
How long is the private jet flight from New York to Washington?
About 50 minutes from Teterboro in a light jet, gate to gate. The great-circle distance is about 194 nautical miles to Dulles and about 182 to Reagan National.
How much does a private jet from New York to Washington cost?
Roughly $8,000 to $14,500 one way in a light jet and $5,000 to $9,500 in a turboprop, as an estimate for October 2026. A flight into Reagan National adds the cost of the security officer and the extra preparation, which the operator prices.
Which airport should I use for a private jet to Washington?
Dulles for most trips. It has runways of up to 11,500 feet, Signature open around the clock with customs on site, Atlantic as a second FBO, and no special security program. Reagan National makes sense when time in the city matters more than ease, because it is about 11 minutes from downtown against about 53 from Dulles.
What is the DASSP for Reagan National?
The DCA Access Standard Security Program, run by the TSA. Under the federal rule, a flight must depart from a TSA-approved gateway airport with no intermediate stops, passengers and crew must be screened under the program before boarding, and an armed security officer must be aboard unless a Federal Air Marshal is, or the flight carries no passengers.
Who can fly into Reagan National on a private charter?
Not every operator. NBAA's summary of the TSA program lists charter operators under a Twelve-Five Standard Security Program flying aircraft over 12,500 pounds, among others. A Citation CJ3 or CJ4 is above that weight, while a Phenom 100EV or Citation M2 is below it. Jake asks the operator for its DASSP approval before quoting a Reagan National trip.
Do I need a slot to land at Reagan National in a private jet?
Yes. The TSA says all unscheduled general aviation flights to and from Reagan National need an FAA slot reservation, and the FAA's reservation system requires one for all non-scheduled IFR arrivals and departures from 6 am to 11:59 pm daily. The operator also sends passenger and crew details to the TSA at least 24 hours before departure.
Can a private jet park overnight at Reagan National?
Not at Signature, the only FBO listed there. It reports no overnight hangar or ramp parking and is open 6 am to 10 pm. A crew that is staying overnight usually positions the aircraft to another airport, so Jake plans the return and the parking together.
What is Leesburg Executive Airport, and when does it make sense?
It is a general aviation airport in Loudoun County with a single 5,500-foot runway, one FBO (Kuhn Jet Center) and U.S. Customs seven days a week from 6 am to 9 pm on 24 hours' notice. It is 9 to 10 nautical miles from Dulles, so it suits trips to Loudoun County or when Dulles is crowded.
Is Dulles ever too busy for private jets?
The FAA Chart Supplement warns that in periods of heavy aircraft volume, long-term parking may be unavailable and only fuel and quick-turn services may be offered. Landing fees also apply. Jake confirms parking with the FBO for your dates.
When is the National Cherry Blossom Festival in 2027?
March 20 to April 11, 2027, with the parade on April 10. Aircraft and hotels are in demand when the trees bloom, so ask for a quote early.
