The short answer

A super-midsize jet from Teterboro to Aspen takes about four hours going west, and a little over three and a quarter coming home. A one-way charter usually costs between about $25,000 and $52,000 in that category, and less in a light jet. A super-midsize such as the Challenger 350 fits most families: it flies the route nonstop and copes well with Aspen's altitude and short winter days. What most people don't know: Aspen's airport closes completely from April 4 to November 19, 2027 to rebuild the runway, so the last two weeks of the ski season and all of summer 2027 mean flying into Eagle County or Rifle and driving about an hour and a half.

How long is the flight from Teterboro to Aspen?

Estimates. Block time is the gate-to-gate figure: the distance divided by typical cruise speeds (430 to 470 knots), plus roughly 20 minutes for taxi, climb and descent, adjusted for the westerly winds that make the westbound leg longer. On a strong winter jet-stream day the difference can be larger. Turboprops and very light jets are not listed because they would usually need a fuel stop.

How much does a private jet from Teterboro to Aspen cost?

Estimated ranges as of October 2026, in US dollars, including the 7.5% federal excise tax. These are estimates from published hourly rates, not quotes.
AircraftOne wayRound trip
Light jet$15,000 to $33,000$28,000 to $50,000
Midsize jet$19,000 to $40,000$36,000 to $62,000
Super-midsize jet$25,000 to $52,000$48,000 to $82,000
Heavy jet$35,000 to $72,000$68,000 to $115,000Wingspan limit applies

What goes into the price

An Aspen quote has the usual parts:

  • about four hours of flight time each way at the operator’s hourly rate
  • positioning if the aircraft isn’t already in the Northeast, or has to go home empty
  • the 7.5% federal excise tax, plus a $5.30 per-passenger segment fee in 2026
  • handling at both ends

Some costs come up more often on this route:

  • De-icing. Winter mornings can mean de-icing at both Teterboro and Aspen. Aspen has a de-ice pad by Taxiway Alpha, and Atlantic doesn’t publish de-icing prices.
  • Parking and crew. Atlantic Aviation is the only FBO, so parking and hangar fees are set by one company, and hangar space is scarce in storms and holiday weeks. If the aircraft and crew stay for your trip, you pay for nights and per diem.
  • Peak-week fees. Atlantic refers to rates and special event fees through its online pricing tool. Jake gets them for your dates.

What makes this route cheaper or more expensive

Holidays. Atlantic flags extra ramp compression over Thanksgiving (November 25 to 29, 2026) and from December 24, 2026 to January 3, 2027. Those are the most expensive days of the year to fly into Aspen, and aircraft that can use the airport are in short supply.

The wingspan limit. Only aircraft with a wingspan of 95 feet or less can land, which narrows the heavy jets available. For a large group, the right aircraft may have to come from further away.

Direction. Like most ski destinations, Aspen sees aircraft arrive full and leave empty at the start of a holiday, and the reverse at the end. One-way trips in the busy direction usually carry some positioning cost.

2027. With Aspen closed from April 4 to November 19, 2027, the alternatives get busier, and trips into Eagle County or Rifle add ground transport.

Empty legs around Aspen

An empty leg is a flight the operator has to make anyway, sometimes sold at a discount. Charter Jet One puts the saving on an empty leg at up to 75% of a custom charter price. The ski holidays create a predictable rhythm, though it’s an industry pattern rather than something we can cite: aircraft drop families in Aspen just before Christmas and often fly home empty, then come back empty to collect them in early January.

An illustrative scenario: a super-midsize jet takes a family to Aspen on December 23 and has to be back at Teterboro on December 24. A traveller heading east that day could fly it for much less. That’s an example of how empty legs arise, not a flight on offer. They depend on someone else’s schedule and can change at short notice. Tell Jake if you’re flexible.

Departing from Teterboro

Teterboro is about 12 miles from Midtown, around 22 minutes in free-flow traffic, more at busy times. It has runways of 6,997 and 6,014 feet. Aircraft over 100,000 pounds at their actual weight need the Airport Manager’s permission, which doesn’t affect any aircraft that can use Aspen. Night departures from runway 24 are limited to 80 decibels from 10 pm to 7 am, and voluntary quiet hours run 11 pm to 6 am. Jet Aviation, Atlantic and several Signature terminals operate at Teterboro.

Timing your departure. Aspen is two hours behind New York, its last departures are at 10:30 pm, and it closes at 11 pm. A flight that leaves Teterboro in the early afternoon lands in Aspen’s mid-afternoon, leaving room for weather. Late departures from New York don’t work in winter.

Arriving in Aspen

The airport. Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE), also known as Sardy Field, is 3 miles from downtown Aspen, about 10 minutes by car. It sits at 7,838 feet with a single 8,006-foot runway that slopes uphill to the southeast.

How it operates. Because of the terrain to the south, most aircraft land toward the southeast and take off toward the northwest, so arrivals and departures fly toward each other. In some winds that means delays, weight limits or cancellations.

The rules that matter:

Rule Detail
Wingspan 95 feet maximum. That rules out the Gulfstream G650 and G700 and the Bombardier Global 7500.
Weight No aircraft with a maximum landing weight over 100,000 pounds dual-wheel or 160,000 pounds dual-tandem.
Curfew The airport is closed from 11 pm to 7 am. No departures after 10:30 pm.
Night rules Between 30 minutes after sunset and 11 pm, extra pilot and equipment requirements apply.
Tower Open 7 am to 8 pm. The field is uncontrolled from 8 pm to 11 pm.
Noisier aircraft Stage 2 aircraft may fly in daylight only. Stage 1 aircraft are banned.

Approaches. The airport is on the FAA’s list of special qualification airports for airline captains because of the surrounding terrain and climb requirements. There are two localizer approaches. The special one, with lower minimums, requires FAA authorization for the operator. This is one reason operator choice matters more at Aspen than almost anywhere else.

The FBO. Atlantic Aviation is the only FBO, open 6 am to 11 pm. It offers de-icing and heated hangars that take aircraft up to a Gulfstream G450.

Ground distances (free-flow). About 9 minutes to downtown Aspen, 4 minutes to Buttermilk, 10 minutes to Aspen Highlands, 11 minutes to Snowmass Village and 13 minutes to Woody Creek. Basalt is 26 minutes and Carbondale 41. Free buses connect all four mountains.

The 2027 closure

The airport’s own fact sheet says Aspen/Pitkin County Airport will close from 11 pm on Sunday, April 4, 2027 until 7 pm on Friday, November 19, 2027 to rebuild the runway to current FAA standards. The closure includes private jets and helicopters.

The runway will move about 80 feet west and widen from 100 to 150 feet, which is expected to raise the wingspan limit from 95 to 118 feet. The airport hasn’t published that figure yet, so treat it as reported, not confirmed.

What it means for you:

  • The end of the ski season. Aspen Snowmass is open until April 18, 2027, two weeks after the airport closes. Late-season trips will need an alternate.
  • Summer 2027. All of summer is inside the closure, including the Aspen Ideas Festival, the Aspen Music Festival and July 4. Aspen Snowmass says the resort stays open and points visitors to Eagle County (about 70 miles, roughly an hour and a half by car), Denver and, for private aviation, Rifle.
  • The new terminal. It’s targeted for 2029, and the airport says terminal construction isn’t expected to disrupt service.

Alternates

Airport Runway Drive to Aspen When it’s used
Eagle County (EGE) 9,000 ft About 70 miles, roughly 1.5 hours Larger aircraft, weather at Aspen, the 2027 closure. Has customs.
Rifle Garfield County (RIL) 7,000 ft About 65 miles, roughly 1.5 hours Private flights during weather or the 2027 closure. A trade source describes it as having the most stable weather of the alternates.
Grand Junction (GJT) 9,339 ft About 130 miles, roughly 2.5 hours The usual alternate for aircraft Aspen can’t take.
Denver Centennial (APA) 10,001 ft About 216 miles, 4 hours or more Open 24 hours, useful when the mountains are closed by weather.

In winter, Independence Pass (Colorado 82) is closed. In the 2025–26 season it closed on November 17, and it usually reopens the week before Memorial Day. From the east, the drive goes around through Glenwood Springs, which the Colorado DOT says adds a few hours. From Eagle or Rifle, Interstate 70 and Colorado 82 are the normal route anyway.

Altitude, weather and timing

Density altitude. Aspen says that on a calm, cool spring morning the density altitude can be around 9,555 feet, and in the middle of a summer day it can rise to 11,000 feet. High density altitude means the aircraft needs more runway and climbs less steeply, so operators may limit passengers, bags or fuel, or plan a fuel stop. On summer afternoons this matters more than in winter.

Weather. Winter brings snow, de-icing and, at times, diversions. A trade source says simply that “Aspen diverts often.” Plan for the possibility of landing at Rifle or Eagle and driving.

Altitude and you. The CDC says unacclimatized travelers who sleep at 8,000 feet or above risk altitude illness. Aspen sits just below that, and some lodging is higher. If anyone in your party is concerned, ask their doctor before the trip.

Season dates. Aspen Snowmass is scheduled to open November 26, 2026, and close April 18, 2027. The X Games are in Aspen January 29 to 31, 2027. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is January 18 and Presidents’ Day February 15, 2027.

When to book. For Christmas to New Year’s, start as soon as your dates are set. The aircraft that can use Aspen and the parking at its one FBO both run short.

Which aircraft fits best

For most families, a super-midsize jet such as the Challenger 350 or 3500 is the right answer. It flies the route nonstop in both directions, it has a cabin you can stand in for four hours, and it carries a reasonable amount of ski gear. The Challenger 3500 has 106 cubic feet of baggage space, reachable in flight. Its 69-foot wingspan is well inside Aspen’s limit.

Size down to a light jet for a couple or small family travelling light, and accept that a fuel stop is possible going west. Size up to a heavy jet for larger groups, choosing one with a wingspan of 95 feet or less, or flying into Eagle County if you want something bigger.

How Jake handles this route

For Aspen, the choice of operator matters as much as the aircraft. Jake checks that the operator is ARGUS Gold or Platinum rated and has crews who fly into Aspen regularly. He plans departures around the 10:30 pm cut-off and the two-hour time change, and he arranges a backup car in case of a diversion to Rifle or Eagle. For 2027 he plans around the closure from the start. He is often at Teterboro himself to see Aspen clients off.

Questions people ask about Teterboro to Aspen

How long is the flight from New York to Aspen by private jet?

About 4 hours going west in a super-midsize jet such as a Challenger 350, and about 3 hours 20 minutes coming back east. The great-circle distance from Teterboro is about 1,506 nautical miles, and the westerly winds make the outbound leg the longer one.

How much does a private jet from New York to Aspen cost?

Roughly $25,000 to $52,000 one way in a super-midsize jet and $15,000 to $33,000 in a light jet, as an estimate for October 2026. Christmas to New Year's and Presidents' Day week sit at the top of the range.

Is the Aspen airport closing in 2027?

Yes. Aspen/Pitkin County Airport closes from 11 pm on Sunday, April 4, 2027 to 7 pm on Friday, November 19, 2027 to rebuild and move the runway. Private jets and helicopters can't use it in that period. Eagle County and Rifle are the usual alternatives, each about an hour and a half by car.

Can any private jet land in Aspen?

No. Aircraft with a wingspan over 95 feet can't use the airport, which rules out the Gulfstream G650 and G700 and the Bombardier Global 7500. There's also a landing weight limit of 100,000 pounds dual-wheel. After the rebuild, the wingspan limit is expected to rise to 118 feet.

Does Aspen airport have a curfew?

Yes, a mandatory one. The airport is closed from 11 pm to 7 am, and no departures are allowed after 10:30 pm. A de-icing queue or a late arrival can push a departure past the cut-off and force an overnight.

Can I fly a light jet nonstop from New York to Aspen?

Sometimes. A light jet such as a Phenom 300E has the range on paper, but with a full cabin, ski bags and a strong westbound headwind, the operator may plan a fuel stop. A super-midsize avoids the question.

Should I fly into Aspen or Eagle County?

Aspen if you can. It's about 10 minutes from town, while Eagle County is about 70 miles and an hour and a half away. Eagle County has a longer 9,000-foot runway and fewer restrictions, and it is the answer during Aspen's 2027 closure and for jets over 95 feet.

When is the busiest time to fly to Aspen?

Christmas to New Year's. Atlantic Aviation, the only FBO at Aspen, flags extra ramp pressure from December 24, 2026 to January 3, 2027 and over Thanksgiving, November 25 to 29, 2026. The X Games are in Aspen from January 29 to 31, 2027.

Why do flights to Aspen sometimes divert?

Mostly because of weather and wind. The approach has high minimums, the single runway sits among mountains, and arrivals and departures normally use opposite ends, so tailwinds can stop operations. Rifle, Eagle County and Grand Junction are the usual alternates.

How many ski bags fit on a private jet?

It depends on the aircraft's baggage hold, so we check it for your party. As a guide, a Citation CJ3 has 65 cubic feet of baggage space and a Challenger 3500 has 106 cubic feet. On hot or high-weight days the operator may also limit what can be loaded.
