The short answer
A heavy jet from Teterboro to London takes about six and a half hours going east and around an hour longer coming home, against the jet stream. A one-way charter usually costs between about $65,000 and $140,000 in a heavy jet such as a Challenger 650 or Gulfstream G450. Farnborough, a business-aviation-only airport about 38 miles from central London, is the usual choice. What most people don't know: on the flight home, the UK charges Air Passenger Duty of £1,097 per passenger in 2026 to 2027 on private jets of 20 tonnes or more, up about 70% in a year, so a lighter super-midsize can cost less in tax.

What goes into the price
A London trip is the most expensive on this site, and the price has the most parts:
- Flight time. About 6.5 hours east and 7.5 west in a heavy jet, at the operator’s hourly rate.
- Positioning. Many heavy and ultra-long-range jets are based in the US. A one-way trip usually carries the aircraft’s empty return or its positioning.
- US international tax. Because the flight is international, the 7.5% excise tax doesn’t apply. Instead, the US international arrival and departure tax does: $23.40 per passenger for each US departure and arrival in 2026.
- UK Air Passenger Duty on the way home. See below. This is often the surprise.
- Airport and FBO charges in London. Landing, handling and parking. Universal’s 2026 guide says Luton has some of the costliest parking in the area, sometimes over $2,000 a night for a large Global or Gulfstream.
- Crew costs. If the aircraft waits in London for your return, you pay crew hotels and per diem.
- Catering on a long flight.
- De-icing at Teterboro on winter mornings.
As a cross-check, Air Charter Service’s published guide puts a Gulfstream G450 from New York to London at $80,000 to $90,000, before sales taxes. That falls inside the heavy-jet range above.
Air Passenger Duty on the flight home
The UK charges Air Passenger Duty on flights leaving the UK. The US is in the long-haul band, and private jets have their own higher rate. It applies to “planes of 20 tonnes or more equipped to carry fewer than 19 passengers.”
| Period | Higher rate to the US, per passenger |
|---|---|
| April 2025 to March 2026 | £647 |
| April 2026 to March 2027 | £1,097 |
| April 2027 to March 2028 | £1,132.76 |
That’s a rise of about 70% in one year. For eight passengers in 2026 to 2027 it comes to £8,776 on the flight home.
The 20-tonne line matters when choosing an aircraft. By manufacturer figures for maximum take-off weight:
- Under the line: the Challenger 350 and 3500, at 40,600 pounds (about 18.4 tonnes).
- Over the line: the Challenger 650, at 48,200 pounds (about 21.9 tonnes), and the Gulfstream G450, at 74,600 pounds (about 33.8 tonnes).
Lighter aircraft pay lower rates. How the duty is worked out for a particular aircraft and seating layout is the operator’s job, and Jake gets the figure before you book.
What makes this route cheaper or more expensive
The aircraft. The route rules out light and midsize jets. The real choice is between a super-midsize, which may need a fuel stop coming home, and a heavy or ultra-long-range jet that flies nonstop both ways.
The London airport. Parking, handling and slot costs vary widely. Farnborough and Biggin Hill are business-aviation airports. Luton and Stansted are busy airline airports where business flights need slots. London City is small and expensive, with no overnight parking.
The summer season. Demand rises around the big events:
| Event | 2027 dates |
|---|---|
| RHS Chelsea Flower Show | May 18 to 22 |
| Royal Ascot | June 15 to 19 |
| Henley Royal Regatta | June 29 to July 4 |
| Goodwood Festival of Speed | July 15 to 18 |
One way or round trip. If you stay more than a few days, it’s often cheaper for the aircraft to fly home and come back than to wait. Jake prices both.
Empty legs on the transatlantic route
Transatlantic empty legs exist when an aircraft finishes a trip on one side of the Atlantic and has to go home. They’re less frequent and less predictable than on domestic routes. We couldn’t find published data on how often they arise. Charter Jet One cites discounts of up to 75%.
An illustrative example: a European-based heavy jet brings clients to Teterboro and returns to Farnborough empty the next day. A traveller with flexible plans could fly with it for much less. That’s an example, not a flight on offer. Tell Jake your window.
Departing from Teterboro
From Midtown, Teterboro is about 12 miles and roughly 22 minutes in light traffic. Three rules matter on this route:
- Weight. The 100,000-pound limit applies to the aircraft’s actual weight. The ultra-long-range jets that fly to London are close to it at full fuel. The Gulfstream G650 and Global 6500 are certified just under it, so they aren’t affected. Larger types, such as the Global 7500 and G650ER, must keep their operating weight under the limit, which the operator plans for. Jake checks this with the operator.
- Night noise. Departures from runway 24 are limited to 80 decibels from 10 pm to 7 am, and the airport asks for voluntary restraint from 11 pm to 6 am. An overnight flight to London usually leaves in the evening, so the operator plans around both.
- Customs. Teterboro has US Customs on the field, open 7:30 am to 11:15 pm daily, so you clear on your return at the same airport.
The operator files the US advance passenger manifest at least 60 minutes before departure.
Choosing your London airport

Maximum 29 passengers. Open 8 am to 8 pm weekdays and 10 am to 5 pm weekends. Military flights take priority. Not approved for pets. |
| London Oxford (OXF) | 1,552 m | About 60 miles, 90 to 120 minutes | For Oxford and the Cotswolds side. Approved for pets. |
Drive times are from Universal’s 2026 guide and vary with traffic.
Farnborough is our usual recommendation for a transatlantic jet. It’s built for business aviation, with a runway long enough for heavy jets and no airline queues. It has movement caps: 50,000 a year, no more than 8,900 at weekends and bank holidays. The airport has applied to raise the weekend limit to 13,500, and a public inquiry is due to begin on May 11, 2027.
London City is the closest to the City and Canary Wharf, but only for aircraft and crews approved for its steep approach. Trade press reports London City approval for the Falcon 8X and 6X, and steep-approach certification for types including the Falcon 7X and Challenger 350. Approval covers each aircraft and operator, so we check the airport’s current list for the specific jet.
Entering the UK
The ETA.
- US citizens need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation. It has been required since January 8, 2025, and it applies on a private jet just as on an airline.
- It costs £20, the fee since April 8, 2026, and is non-refundable.
- It lasts two years or until the passport expires, and allows visits of up to six months each.
- Every traveller needs one, including babies. A decision usually comes within a day but can take up to three working days.
- Apply only through GOV.UK or the official UK ETA app.
The General Aviation Report. The operator must send UK Border Force a General Aviation Report no earlier than 48 hours and no later than 2 hours before departure. The fines are serious: up to £10,000, plus £2,000 for each passenger who arrives without an ETA or visa. Jake confirms everyone’s ETA before the day.
Allowances. If you arrive by private plane, your duty-free allowance for other goods is £270, not the £390 that applies to other arrivals. The alcohol allowances are the same: 42 litres of beer or cider, 18 litres of wine and 4 litres of spirits. Cash of £10,000 or more must be declared.
Pets
Pets usually travel to Great Britain as cargo. Chartered private aircraft are an exception, but only on an approved route. Both the operator and the arrival airport must be on the UK government’s list.
- Approved airports. Biggin Hill, Farnborough, Stansted, Luton and Oxford are on the list. London City and Northolt aren’t.
- Approved operators. The list was updated on October 9, 2026 and includes NetJets, Flexjet and Clay Lacy Aviation.
From the US, a dog or cat needs:
- a microchip, followed by a rabies vaccination at least 21 days before travel
- a Great Britain pet health certificate signed by an official vet, with entry within 10 days of issue
- for dogs, tapeworm treatment between 24 hours and 5 days before arrival
Biggin Hill has a dedicated pet arrival service.
The flight itself
Winds. The North Atlantic jet stream helps eastbound flights and slows westbound ones. A London trip is usually a shorter overnight flight going out and a longer daytime flight coming home.
Range. Our working figure for the distance is about 2,994 nautical miles.
| Aircraft | Published range | On this route |
|---|---|---|
| Challenger 3500 | 3,400 nm | Little margin westbound into headwinds |
| Challenger 650 | 4,000 nm | Bombardier lists New York–London as one of its city pairs |
| Falcon 7X | 5,950 nm | Nonstop both ways with room to spare |
| Falcon 8X | 6,450 nm | Nonstop both ways with room to spare |
| Global 6500 | 6,600 nm | Nonstop both ways with room to spare |
Crew rules. US charter rules limit a two-pilot crew on an unscheduled trip to 10 hours of flight time in 24 hours, so a normal London flight fits with a standard crew. A fuel stop or long delay can change that, which is another reason to choose an aircraft that flies the route nonstop.
Which aircraft fits best
A heavy jet is the right answer for most London trips: a Challenger 650, Falcon 2000LXS or Gulfstream G450 flies nonstop both ways with a full cabin. An ultra-long-range jet adds space, sleeping room and more margin, and suits larger groups or onward travel. A super-midsize can save money going east and pays a lower rate of UK Air Passenger Duty under the 20-tonne line, but you should accept that the flight home may stop for fuel.
How Jake handles this route
Jake chooses the London airport from where you’re staying and the aircraft you fly. He checks the operator is ARGUS Gold or Platinum rated, confirms the London airport’s hours, slots and any approval the aircraft needs, and makes sure every passenger has an ETA before the operator files the General Aviation Report. If you’re bringing a pet, he checks that both the operator and the airport are on the UK’s approved list. For London departures he is often at Teterboro in person.
Questions people ask about Teterboro to London
How long is a private jet flight from New York to London?
About 6.5 hours going east in a heavy jet and about 7.5 hours coming back west, against the jet stream. The great-circle distance from Teterboro to Farnborough is about 2,994 nautical miles.
How much does a private jet from New York to London cost?
Roughly $65,000 to $140,000 one way in a heavy jet, as an estimate for October 2026, and $85,000 to $170,000 in an ultra-long-range jet. Air Charter Service's published guide puts a Gulfstream G450 from New York to London at $80,000 to $90,000, before sales taxes.
Which private jets can fly nonstop from New York to London?
Heavy and ultra-long-range jets, such as the Challenger 650, Gulfstream G450 and G650, Falcon 7X and 8X, and Global 6500. A super-midsize such as the Challenger 3500, with a published range of 3,400 nautical miles, usually manages eastbound, but westbound into headwinds a fuel stop may be needed.
Which London airport is best for private jets?
Farnborough for most trips: it handles only business aviation, it's about 38 miles from central London, and it has no airline traffic. Biggin Hill is closer to the south and east, Luton and Stansted suit the north, and London City is closest to the City and Canary Wharf but only for specially approved aircraft and crews.
Do Americans need a UK ETA to fly in on a private jet?
Yes. US citizens need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation, required since January 8, 2025, whatever the aircraft. It costs £20 since April 8, 2026, lasts two years or until the passport expires, and every traveler needs one, including children.
What is the General Aviation Report?
It's the passenger and flight notice the operator must send UK Border Force between 48 and 2 hours before departure. The operator can be fined up to £10,000, plus £2,000 for each passenger who arrives without an ETA or visa, so we check everyone's ETA before the flight.
What is Air Passenger Duty on a private jet from London?
On a private jet of 20 tonnes or more with fewer than 19 seats, the higher rate of Air Passenger Duty to the US is £1,097 per passenger from April 1, 2026 to March 31, 2027, up from £647 the year before. Lighter jets pay lower rates, and the operator confirms the rate for your aircraft.
Can I bring my dog to London on a private jet?
Yes, if the operator and arrival airport are on the UK's approved list for pets on chartered aircraft. Farnborough, Biggin Hill, Stansted, Luton and Oxford are listed, but London City and Northolt aren't. Dogs from the US need a microchip, a rabies vaccination at least 21 days before, tapeworm treatment and a Great Britain pet health certificate.
Can a private jet land at London City Airport?
Only if the aircraft and its crew are approved for London City's 5.5-degree steep approach. The ramp is small and allows no overnight parking, and the airport is closed from 12:30 pm Saturday to 12:30 pm Sunday.
Is there duty-free when arriving in the UK by private jet?
Yes, but less of it. Passengers arriving in Great Britain by private plane have a £270 allowance for other goods, not the £390 that applies to other arrivals. The alcohol and tobacco allowances are the same.
