The short answer
The flight from Teterboro to East Hampton takes about 30 minutes, and a one-way charter in a light jet or turboprop usually costs between about $3,500 and $9,000, because the aircraft normally flies back empty. East Hampton's main runway is 4,255 feet, which suits turboprops and light jets; larger jets use Gabreski in Westhampton Beach. What most people don't know: the airport is still public-use and open to charter with no prior permission, despite the town's 2022 attempt to restrict it. The code changed from HTO to JPX in that episode and has stayed, and the curfew is voluntary but publicly tracked.

What goes into the price
On a 30-minute flight, the time in the air is the smallest part of the price. Two things matter more.
The empty leg back. After dropping you in East Hampton, the aircraft usually returns to its base, and that flight is priced in. A one-way trip therefore costs close to a same-day round trip. If you go out Friday and back Sunday, the aircraft may fly four times: you on two, empty on two.
Fixed costs. Landing fees, handling and any minimum charge the operator sets don’t shrink with a short flight. East Hampton charges landing fees to all aircraft, scaled by weight. The town’s schedule is dated May 1, 2026. We couldn’t open the official document, so Jake gets the current figures for your aircraft.
The rest is standard:
- the 7.5% federal excise tax and a $5.30 per-passenger segment fee in 2026
- handling at Teterboro
- catering, if you want it on a half-hour trip
What makes this route cheaper or more expensive
The weekend rhythm. Demand peaks on Thursday afternoon, all day Friday, Sunday afternoon and Monday morning from May to September. Those are the hours the local pilot pledge names as commuter peaks. Flying outside them is easier and usually cheaper.
The season. Summer 2026 was the busiest at East Hampton since 2019, with 16,432 operations from June to August. Jet operations were up 6.3%, and on 11 days the airport handled more than 200 operations.
The aircraft. A turboprop or light jet is the cheapest way to make the trip and the best match for the runway. A midsize jet usually means flying into Gabreski and driving further.
Empty legs on this route
Because so many aircraft fly to the Hamptons full on Friday and back to New York empty, empty legs on this route are common. One broker reported live listings on October 19, 2026 from Westchester to Gabreski on Phenom 300s. It says most are posted one to seven days ahead, are gone within 48 hours and are typically 50 to 75% below normal charter rates. Charter Jet One gives “up to 75%.”
An illustrative example: a light jet drops a family at East Hampton at 2 pm on a Friday and flies back to Teterboro empty. If someone wants to come back to New York that afternoon, that flight may be offered at a fraction of the normal price. That’s how empty legs arise, not a flight for sale. They run on the operator’s timing.
Departing from Teterboro
Teterboro sits about 12 miles from Midtown, some 22 minutes by car when the roads are clear. On a summer Friday, allow more. Its two runways are 6,997 and 6,014 feet long, and the terminals are run by Jet Aviation, Atlantic and Signature. Night noise limits and the airport’s voluntary 11 pm to 6 am quiet hours rarely matter on this trip.
Even with the drive to Teterboro, the jet is far quicker than the road on a summer weekend. One local magazine puts a peak July Friday drive from Manhattan to East Hampton at about four hours.
East Hampton Town Airport today
Name and status. The airport is East Hampton Town Airport, FAA code JPX, formerly East Hampton Airport (HTO). It’s owned by the town and open to the public. It’s in Wainscott, about 3 miles west of East Hampton.
How it got here:
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| January 2022 | The town voted to close the public airport and reopen it as a private one, with prior permission, curfews, a ban on aircraft over 50,000 pounds and on noisy aircraft, and limits on charter trips. |
| May 16, 2022 | A New York court issued a temporary restraining order the day before the planned closure. The airport stayed open and the restrictions never took effect. |
| May 19, 2022 | The FAA identifier changed from HTO to JPX, and charts listed the airport as private. |
| October 19, 2022 | The court made the injunction permanent. |
| March 27, 2024 | The Appellate Division upheld the ruling that the town hadn’t followed the federal noise-restriction process. |
| February 20, 2025 | The FAA corrected the charts to show the airport as public-use again. |
| October 2026 | Local reporting says the town cannot currently make changes. A federal noise study is recommended but not funded. |
What that means for you today:
- No prior permission is needed.
- There’s no mandatory curfew.
- No aircraft types are banned.
- Charter flights need no special town approval.
The curfew is voluntary. The local pilot pledge asks for no operations from 9 pm to 7 am, and the East Hampton Star tracks flights between 10 pm and 7 am. It counted 155 in summer 2026, up 30%, using a public flight-tracking project. A late arrival is legal but noticed, and we plan around it.
Proposals to watch. In February 2026 the town discussed:
- a 15% rise in landing fees and a higher fuel fee
- a permanent control tower
- restoring its pre-2022 public-airport code
We haven’t confirmed that any of these were adopted.
Runways. The main runway, 10/28, is 4,255 by 100 feet, grooved, lit and with GPS approaches at both ends. The crosswind runway, 16/34, is 2,060 feet with no lights. The local pilot pledge asks fixed-wing aircraft to use runway 28 when possible.
Tower. The tower runs only in season. The FAA’s current data gives 8 am to 8 pm from the Saturday before Memorial Day to the Sunday after Labor Day. NBAA reported May 1 to September 7, 7 am to 8 pm, for 2025.
FBO and fuel. Sound Aircraft Services handles ramp and parking and sells jet fuel. There is no customs.
Which aircraft can land there
The main runway is 4,255 feet, with no published weight, wingspan or jet ban in force. Whether a particular jet can use it depends on the operator’s own performance figures and the conditions, especially on a wet runway. Turboprops such as the Pilatus PC-12 and light jets are the natural fit.
For anything larger, or when the runway is wet and short for the aircraft, the answer is Francis S. Gabreski Airport (FOK) in Westhampton Beach:
- a 9,002-foot main runway
- Modern Aviation and Signature as FBOs
- customs
- a tower that stays open to 11 pm
It’s about 21 miles west of East Hampton in a straight line, so the drive is longer. Plan for it.
Other Hamptons airports
| Airport | Runway | Good for | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gabreski, Westhampton Beach (FOK) | 9,002 ft | Larger jets, Westhampton, Southampton | Customs. Modern and Signature. |
| Montauk (MTP) | 3,246 ft | Small aircraft to Montauk | Privately owned. Jets need prior permission. No fuel listed. |
| Southampton Heliport (87N) | Helipad | Helicopters to Southampton | Landing fee $150 to $200. |
| Republic, Farmingdale (FRG) | 6,833 ft | Western Long Island, weather fallback | Customs. Long drive to the East End. |
| Long Island MacArthur (ISP) | 7,006 ft | Weather fallback | Customs. Long drive to the East End. |
Jet, helicopter or car
- Jet from Teterboro. About 30 minutes in the air. It carries six or seven people and their luggage, and lands at East Hampton or Gabreski. You still have to get to Teterboro first.
- Helicopter or seaplane from Manhattan. No drive to an airport, but fewer people and much less luggage. Blade’s 2026 Hamptons season ran May 21 to September 8 to East Hampton, Southampton, Westhampton, Montauk and, by seaplane, Sag Harbor and Shelter Island. These are separate operators, but Jake can book one alongside your trip.
- Car. About four hours on a peak July Friday, according to one local magazine, and far less off-peak.
Seasons and events
The season runs from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. The Hampton Classic horse show in Bridgehampton runs August 29 to September 5, 2027, and traffic at the end of August reflects it. July 4th and Labor Day weekends are the busiest. For those, ask for a quote as early as you can, and especially for Sunday afternoon returns.
Which aircraft fits best
A turboprop or light jet suits almost every Hamptons trip. Either is quick and economical, and it fits the 4,255-foot runway. Choose a midsize jet only for a larger group or a lot of luggage, and expect to land at Gabreski. On a 30-minute flight, a bigger cabin gains you almost nothing.
How Jake handles this route
Jake picks the airport from where you’re staying and the aircraft you need: East Hampton for most light-jet trips, Gabreski for larger aircraft or wet days. He times flights to stay clear of the voluntary curfew and the summer peaks where your schedule allows, and confirms the operator is ARGUS Gold or Platinum rated. He also checks whether a helicopter suits the trip better. He is often on the ramp at Teterboro when Hamptons clients leave.
Questions people ask about Teterboro to East Hampton
How long is the private jet flight from New York to East Hampton?
About 30 minutes from Teterboro in a light jet or turboprop. The great-circle distance is about 82 nautical miles, roughly 95 statute miles.
How much does a private jet to the Hamptons cost?
Roughly $4,500 to $9,000 one way in a light jet and $3,500 to $7,000 in a turboprop, as an estimate for October 2026. Most of the cost is the aircraft's empty flight back to New York and the fixed costs of a short trip, not the 30 minutes in the air.
Is East Hampton Airport still open?
Yes. East Hampton Town Airport is open to the public. The town's 2022 plan to make it private, with prior permission, curfews and limits on charter flights, was blocked by a New York court, made permanent in October 2022 and upheld on appeal in March 2024.
Why is East Hampton airport now called JPX?
When the town tried to reopen it as a private airport in May 2022, the FAA identifier changed from HTO to JPX, under the name East Hampton Town Airport. The private plan was blocked, and the FAA corrected the charts to public use in February 2025, but the JPX code has stayed.
Does East Hampton airport have a curfew?
Not a mandatory one. There is a voluntary curfew, which the local pilot pledge sets at 9 pm to 7 am and local reporting tracks from 10 pm to 7 am. In summer 2026 there were 155 flights in those hours, a figure that is publicly reported.
What size jet can land at East Hampton?
The main runway is 4,255 feet long and 100 feet wide, which suits turboprops and light jets. Whether a given jet can use it depends on the operator's performance data, especially on a wet runway. Larger jets usually fly into Gabreski in Westhampton Beach, which has a 9,002-foot runway.
Do I need permission to fly a charter into East Hampton?
No. There's no prior-permission requirement and no special town approval for charter flights today. Any new restrictions would have to go through the federal noise-restriction process first, and as of October 2026 the town says it can't currently make changes.
Is it faster to fly or drive to the Hamptons?
Flying, by a wide margin on summer weekends. One local magazine puts a peak July Friday drive from Manhattan at about four hours, against about half an hour in the air from Teterboro plus the drive to Teterboro.
Is there customs at East Hampton airport?
No. If you're flying in from abroad, Gabreski (FOK), Republic (FRG) and Long Island MacArthur (ISP) all have customs.
What about a helicopter or seaplane from Manhattan?
They're a real alternative, run by separate operators. Blade's 2026 Hamptons season ran May 21 to September 8 with helicopters and seaplanes from Manhattan. A helicopter avoids the drive to Teterboro but carries fewer people and less luggage than a jet.
